The City of Miami Beach encompasses 7.1 square miles of land and 10 miles of water. City Boundaries extend from Government Cut to the south, 87th Street to the north, Biscayne Bay to the west and the Atlantic Ocean to the east. The Board Walk runs from 21st Street to 46th Street, and then includes a small portion of the beach side on South Pointe Park, the beach walk runs in and along the beach from 5th Street to 14th Lane, and ends on 21St Street.
Long time residents of Miami Beach usually divide the Beach into three geographic sections because they are all mutually distinct from one another. The three divisions of Miami Beach are South Beach (5th-41st Street), Mid Beach (41st-79th Street) and North Beach (79th-87th Street). Even though all of Miami Beach has and is still experiencing tremendous growth in both population and development, South Beach has probably experienced the most growth. It has transcended positively into one of the most pedestrian- friendly communities.
In regards to transportation the city provides an alternative fuel shuttle bus, the Electro Wave, which offers both locals and tourist free transportation throughout the neighborhood. The city is in the process of initiating a controversial plan to install track trolleys throughout the island; this is part of the city’s long-term plan for transportation solutions. The city is always looking for long-term solutions in order to work with the new demands of growth and its impact on limited streets. Miami-Dade County MPO recently began phase 3 of the Bay Link. The study is for a light-rail transit connection between downtown Miami and South Beach. The project is very controversial and still has a substantial number of phases to pass before final decision and approval is received. In order to assure community well being the city carefully manages historical preservation, new parking garages and new developments.
